ARTISTS STATEMENTQuentin is a non-binary multi-media artist and illustrator, born in Kenya, and currently based and living in Toronto, Canada. They are trying to create more artworks that bring forth a world, a galaxy even, in which the mind can escape to a distant planet while the eyes wonder at the beautiful stars dancing in the sky. They use abstract concepts in their artwork to show how they perceive their reality and being. Their artworks make an attempt to convey this using vibrant colors and rough brush strokes, and slowly presenting a narrative with a slightly developing a metaphor for their finite existence.they never depict the entire edifice in their sketches. As a result, they are not constrained by historical actuality and are free to envision their own interpretation. they attempt to tackle a wide range of fantastical ideas in a multi-layered manner by studying the ambiguity of the concept.Their artworks play with daily experiences as a starting point and responds immediately to their surroundings. These are frequently framed examples that would be overlooked in their original context. With Plato's allegory of the cave in mind, they strive to produce works in which the actual event either has yet to occur or has just finished in the mind scape, time or alternate universe: These moments that evoke mood and suspense but are unrelated to a specific plot line. Although the action plays out elsewhere, the mounting tension is captured in time to serve as a memento of an unrealized occurrence.
A LONE STAR, LOST IN TIME
My work is inspired by the concept of Afrofuturism, an artistic and creative movement that mixes aspects of science fiction, fantasy, and Afrocentrism. A future where Black people and their culture are not only existing but also thriving is what this movement envisions. I want to portray a futuristic world that is influenced by African mythology and culture through my art. The persona I developed is a depiction of the Afrofuturist ideal, in which Black people can dwell outside of the confines of the present without being constrained by the laws of time or society. The moments from the character's life that are depicted in my artwork range from their interactions with cutting-edge technology to their exploration of the galaxy to their encounters with other eternal creatures. I want to inspire others to think about the possibilities of a world where Black culture is not only existent but also cherished and where Black people may live without restrictions through my art. The character's vivid red dreadlocks also represent their distinct identity and link to their African origin, which is further emphasized by the inclusion of African-inspired themes and designs in all of the artwork.
